Similar to bifocal eyeglass lenses, bifocal contact lenses provide two powers: one for seeing clearly at a distance and another for seeing up close. On the other hand, multifocal contact lenses, like progressive eyeglass lenses, offer a range of powers for clear vision at all distances: near, intermediate, and far.

Different Types of Multifocal Contact Lenses

Simultaneous Vision Lenses: These lenses simultaneously have distance and near zones in front of the pupil. Despite initial skepticism, your visual system quickly adapts to the power needed, depending on your focus. Simultaneous vision lenses are popular and available in concentric ring and aspheric designs.

Alternating Vision Lenses: These rigid gas-permeable (GP) lenses work like bifocal eyeglasses, where the top part corrects distance vision, and the bottom part contains the near power. As you look down, your pupil moves into the near zone for reading.

Will multifocal contact lenses work for me?

Many people find multifocal contact lenses a convenient solution for their vision needs. However, there might be slight compromises in distance vision clarity or some challenges with night glare. In such cases, we may suggest monovision or modified monovision fitting of regular contact lenses as alternative options.
